We’re not sure exactly when it was, but on one of the first school holidays in November, our North Stars students began calling, asking to come in. Sorry, said the hard-working staff, looking at an afternoon of solid desk time stretching ahead of them. We don’t hold classes on School District holidays or snow days.
Well, the young people countered, couldn’t they just come anyway: like, for the homework time, to hang out with new friends, and for hot chocolate—and the fiber bars? “Fiber bars?” asked a staffer, “What do 8th graders care about fiber?”
Call it collateral learning. Or body and soul. And with a new Gallery space for classes, workshops, live events, and earned income potential, as well as new offices for the staff to continue planning events, we are able to expand city-wide remaining true to our calling. This is not just a building, but the art itself is the safe haven, a place to know both hard truths and life-giving beauty.
